Surf Norfolk Island where your Perfect Wave Awaits
Welcome to Episode 13 of the Untold Norfolk Island travel podcast series.
My name is Jodie Williams and as a Norfolk Islander & Churchill Fellow, I am your ‘on island’ podcast host.
You have just heard a snippet of a singalong evening at a local island home.
In this episode we’ll be touching upon the many physical, mental, social, and emotional benefits of participating in ocean activities, with a focus on surfing…. from the therapeutic effects of blue spaces, to the unique benefits of surfing as exercise and meditation, and the importance of responsible ocean conservation through active participation in water sports.
Surfing is a wonderful comprehensive workout for the body. The constant paddling and wave catching engage multiple muscle groups, improving cardiovascular fitness, muscle toning, and flexibility. Surfing requires a balance of strength, endurance, and agility, strengthening core muscles, enhancing coordination, and improving balance.
The repetitive motion of paddling and the exertion of catching a wave elevate heart rate and increase blood flow, improving cardiovascular health. The dynamic nature of surfing also promotes joint mobility and flexibility.

Her sister, Bronwyn now shares an excerpt from one of Gab’s articles about the health benefits of regularly submerging in the cold water of our Norfolk ocean surrounds… and as it’s only a maximum of a 10 minute drive from anywhere on the island we very much appreciate how easy it is for us to have a quick dip or snorkel or follow a surf break - or embrace a daily routine of early morning swims within this way of life we live and love…

While modern scientific exploration continues to amaze and unearth the how’s of how things work, it also is uncovering and validating the practical wisdom and intelligence of ancient traditions. One of these is the practice of regular immersion in cold water, a tradition recorded throughout many cultural groups as a spiritual and healing practice as seen in Taoism, North American Indian tribes and European plunge baths.
There are many benefits to immersing yourself in cold water, and while some people resort to cold showers, for those of us here in the South Pacific Ocean, a regular dip in the cold water surrounding Norfolk Island can deliver more than just a skin tingling exhilarating way to wake up.
“The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea” - Isak Dinesen.
Ocean bathing also delivers a mineral rich environment that assists in clearing various skin infections, can help with arthritic conditions, and delivers negative ion rich salty air which may benefit those with respiratory conditions.
While we may prefer comfortable environments, there is a case for getting out there in the elements, immersing ourselves in our natural environment and invigorating not only our cellular processes, but our minds and spirits. Luckily the salty pacific surrounding us awaits, and just as it replenished our ancestors, so can we partake of its healing properties. Is it time to instigate a daily immersion perhaps?

While ocean activities offer numerous benefits, it's essential to prioritize health and safety. Always check weather conditions and ocean forecasts before venturing into the water, and be aware of potential hazards such as strong currents, rip tides, and marine life.
Always surf with a buddy and let someone know where you're going and when you'll be back.
Respect the ocean and its inhabitants, and avoid activities that could harm marine life. Be mindful of the environment and dispose of waste properly, ensuring the long-term health and beauty of the ocean.
Watch out for our wunnas - these are sea urchins that live upon the reefs from which you will be stepping on and off. IF you happen to step on one, and the long spines enter your foot or perhaps your hand as you are climbing out…pee on it. Yes, pee on it - the medical reasoning is that the uric acid dissolves the tiny spikes that can move within your body and risk infection.
